Losing Qualities Guide

Racing accounts for around a quarter of all spread bets placed which in today's markets means a considerable amount of money is changing hands every single race. There are a large number of markets available for you to wager on in horse racing with the most popular ones being:

Match Bets - A Match Bet spread bet is a prediction of the distance separating two horses when they cross the line. The market is a supremacy market, where the more fancied horse is listed first and the less fancied horse second.

Match bets wagers can help compound the profit generated from laying systems and services. For example I've used a tipster service in the past. Using the picks I would SELL the horse's Supremacy that the tipster has predicted to lay and using this method I have managed to quadruple what I would have made just using betfair!

Obviously using this system could also compound your losses so a laying service with a proven history is required...

Also not all of the horses predicted to lay will appear in the spread betting match bets but when they do SELL!

Favourites – Index on the favourites being placed in the races in a particular meeting. 25 pts for a win, 10 for coming second and 5 for coming third. This spread comes in the form of on the course favourites and the favourites as shown in that day's racing post.

Starting Prices - A Starting Prices spread bet is a prediction of the total starting prices of all the winners at a particular meeting. For example a 5/1 winner counts as 5 points, a 7/2 winner counts as 3.5 points.

Distances – A distances spread is a prediction on the distance (measured in lengths) between the first placed horse and the second.

Some tips for betting on the distances:

  • Buy when it is raining in long distance especially in non-flat races – The distances get greater when it has been raining and it is quite common to see a horse winning by upwards of 30 lengths in these kind of races.
  • Sell when it is dry – This is the one where most punters will BUY thinking they can make unlimited streams of money if one horses runs away with it. However this happens much less than they think and they will end up walking away down on the day while if you SELL when the spread is inflated you can walk away up.

Starting Price x Distance – This spread is a combination of the starting price and the distance the winning horse wins by. For example a horse that is 10/1 that wins by 10 lengths will make up a spread of 100. This market is only available on major races like the National. This market is recommended to BUY or preferably avoid due to the absolute ridiculous numbers that can be made up.

Take for example the National winner Mon Mome who won by 12 lengths at a Starting Price of 100/1. The make-up of this market was 1200 from a starting spread of somewhere around 60 – 70.

That is why SELLING in this market is dangerous, one outsider comes in and you can be left in the poor house. Even buying in this market can be dangerous because a close call in a race can leave you in the single figures losing 50-60pts (not as bad as over 1000 but still bad if you are buying at more than a couple of quid!).
